Foreigners on the labour market in Poland

The goal of the paper is the analysis of the scale and structure of the phenomenon of labour immigration in Poland after its accession to the European Union. Gradual liberalisation of legal regulations concerning immi-grants on Polish labour market that occurred after 2004 has had an impact on continuous increase in the number of immigrants who work legally in Poland. Citizens of Ukraine are a predominant group of foreigners. Ukrainians have dominated labour market in Poland mainly in construction sector, services in households, agriculture and also in the sector of transport services and warehousing

The dynamics of Polish labour market

The article presents the results of the analyses concerning the parameters of Polish labour market for the years 1998-2009. A special attention was given to the coefficients of occupational activity, employment rates and the level of both general and long-term unemployment. The analyses were performed separately for the gender of employees and with the consideration of the territorial division, while separating voivodeships with the lowest and the highest rates. It has been observed that the dynamics of changes on Polish labour market is closely associated with the changing age structure of the population and has specific consequences in the sphere of condition of Polish pension scheme and social security system. The conclusions emphasise the fact that the level of coefficients that characterise the Polish labour market is the most unfavourable in marginal age brackets of people that make labour resources. During 2004-2009 have been distinguished from the period of 1998-2003, because at that time the change of parameters that characterise Polish labour market was clearly apparent. It was associated with accession of Poland to the EU

Information Management within the LHC Hardware Commissioning Project

    Get PDF
The core task of the commissioning of the LHC technical systems was the individual test of the 1572 superconducting circuits of the collider, the powering tests. The two objectives of these tests were the validation of the different sub-systems making each superconducting circuit as well as the validation of the superconducting elements of the circuits in their final configuration in the tunnel. A wide set of software applications were developed by the team in charge of coordinating the powering activities (Hardware Commissioning Coordination) in order to manage the amount of information required for the preparation, execution and traceability of the tests. In all the cases special care was taken in order to keep the tools consistent with the LHC quality assurance policy, avoid redundancies between applications, ensure integrity and coherence of the test results and optimise their usability within an accelerator operation environment. This paper describes the main characteristics of these tools; it details their positive impact on the completion on time of the LHC Hardware Commissioning Project and presents usage being envisaged during the coming years of operation of the LHC

The role of phytoestrogen therapy in relieving postmenopausal symptoms

    Get PDF
Summary Side effects and contraindications connected with hormonal replacement therapy in climacterium resulted in search for new methods of softening menopausal symptoms. The aim of the following study was to evaluate, based on literature analysis, the effectiveness of phytohormonal therapy as an alternative method of relieving the symptoms of menopausal period and preventing the diseases connected with deficiency of estrogens after menopause. Phytoestrogens therapy reduces the number and strength of the vasomotor symptoms and improves serum lipid profile. Moreover, phytoestrogens show beneficial effects on bone tissue metabolism, skin and mucous membranes condition and are applicable in chemoprevention. This therapy is an effective method, allowing to avoid further changes in blood and urogenital systems, which result from estrogen stimulation deficiency. Phytoestrogens administration is an efficient method of relieving postmenopausal symptoms, facilitating the difficult menopausal period and keeping good health condition

Experiences with surgical treatment of ventricle septal defect as a post infarction complication

Abstract

Background

Complications of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with mechanical defects are associated with poor prognosis. Surgical intervention is indicated for a majority of these patients. The goal of surgical intervention is to improve the systolic cardiac function and to achieve a hemodynamic stability. In this present study we reviewed the outcome of patients with post infarction ventricular septal defect (PVSD) who underwent cardiac surgery.

Methods

We analysed retrospectively the hospital records of 41 patients, whose ages range from 48 to 81, and underwent a surgical treatment between 1990 and 2005 because of PVSD.

Results

In 22 patients concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting (CAGB) was performed. In 15 patients a residual shunt was found, this required re-op in seven of them. The time interval from infarct to rupture was 8.7 days and from rupture to surgery was 23.1 days. Hospital mortality in PVSD group was 32%. The mortality of urgent repair within 3 days of intractable cardiogenic shock was 100%. The mortality of patients with an anterior VSD and a posterior VSD was 29.6% vs 42.8%, respectively. All patients who underwent the surgical repair later than day 36 survived.

Conclusion

Surgical intervention is indicated for a majority of patients with mechanical complications. Cardiogenic shock remains the most important factor that affects the early results. The surgical repair of PVSD should be performed 4–5 weeks after AMI. To improve surgical outcome and hemodynamics the choice of surgical technique and surgical timing as well as preoperative management should be tailored for each patient individually.</p

Dental Health and Mortality in People With End-Stage Kidney Disease Treated With Hemodialysis: A Multinational Cohort Study

Background Dental disease is more extensive in adults with chronic kidney disease, but whether dental health and behaviors are associated with survival in the setting of hemodialysis is unknown. Study Design Prospective multinational cohort. Setting & Participants 4,205 adults treated with long-term hemodialysis, 2010 to 2012 (Oral Diseases in Hemodialysis [ORAL-D] Study). Predictors Dental health as assessed by a standardized dental examination using World Health Organization guidelines and personal oral care, including edentulousness; decayed, missing, and filled teeth index; teeth brushing and flossing; and dental health consultation. Outcomes All-cause and cardiovascular mortality at 12 months after dental assessment. Measurements Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models fitted with shared frailty to account for clustering of mortality risk within countries. Results During a mean follow-up of 22.1 months, 942 deaths occurred, including 477 cardiovascular deaths. Edentulousness (adjusted HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.10-1.51) and decayed, missing, or filled teeth score ≥ 14 (adjusted HR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.33-2.17) were associated with early all-cause mortality, while dental flossing, using mouthwash, brushing teeth daily, spending at least 2 minutes on oral hygiene daily, changing a toothbrush at least every 3 months, and visiting a dentist within the past 6 months (adjusted HRs of 0.52 [95% CI, 0.32-0.85], 0.79 [95% CI, 0.64-0.97], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.58-0.99], 0.84 [95% CI, 0.71-0.99], 0.79 [95% CI, 0.65-0.95], and 0.79 [95% CI, 0.65-0.96], respectively) were associated with better survival. Results for cardiovascular mortality were similar. Limitations Convenience sample of clinics. Conclusions In adults treated with hemodialysis, poorer dental health was associated with early death, whereas preventive dental health practices were associated with longer survival
